Periodontal Disease

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease (also known as gum disease) is an infection of the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. It is generally painless, so you might not know you even have it but it is a very serious disease that can result in tooth loss and other health conditions.

According to the American Academy of Periodontology, the consequences of periodontal (gum) disease may include permanent tooth loss, higher risk of stroke and heart disease. The main cause of the periodontal disease is bacterial plaque. The plaque builds up on your teeth causing your gums to become red, swollen, bleeding and sensitive. Researchers found that the bacteria present in infected gums can travel in the bloodstream reaching arteries causing arterial plaque which can affect blood flow.
